Mark Description: The mark consists of The ring is to have an oval top, in the center area of which shall be the palmetto tree and the two oval shields which will copy the obtuse and the reverse of the South Carolina state seal. This entire center area shall be enclosed by a rope design border. Outside the rope border which surrounds the center area and the lower rope border which forms the edge of the base shall appear the lettering "The Military College of S.C. 1842". The left shank of the ring shall consist of the United States Springfield rifle with fixed bayonet extending from the lower left portion to the upper right portion of the seven-sided area. The West Point type sword shall cross the rifle in a symmetrical position with the hilt placed in the lower right hand portion and the blade extending upwards to the left under the rifle. The sword and rifle are superimposed over a circular laurel wreath which is tied at the lower portion with an artistically draped ribbon. Super imposed over the know of the ribbon shall appear a miniature reproduction of a 30 caliber rifle cartridge extending in a vertical manner toward the intersection of the rifle and sword. Behind the top of the sword shall appear a spray of laurel. Behind the bayonet of the rifle shall appear a spray of oak. Superimposed on an arc, concentric with the circular laurel wreath, shall appear a scroll which drapes over the blade of the sword and the muzzle of the rifle. On the scroll in designed interwoven shaded Roman front shall appear the name "Citadel" in raised letters. Just above the scroll, between the scroll and the top edges of the seven sided area, shall appear in smaller shaded Roman the word "The". The dominant motif of the right shank of the ring shall be a replica of the famous Star of the west medal placed on a sunburst background in the triangle formed by the staffs of the crossed United States and South Carolina flags and the top edge of the seven-sided area. The tips of the flag staffs shall carry balls surmounted by spread American Eagles. The flag shall drape gracefully with the outer portions folding forward over the bases of the staffs. In the square shaped area formed by the ends of the draped flags and the inverted chevron there shall appear a pyramid formed by six cannon balls, which shall be modeled in deep relief. The area behind the ball and eagle on the staff of the United States flag shall show laurel leaves in the background. Oak leaves form the background of the ball and eagle on the staff of the South Carolina flag. A single tassel shall appear on each flag staff.
